News from the Studio
Hello Reader,
I hope this newsletter finds you well! For me, this month has been all about portraits! I am working on five (yes FIVE portrait commissions). And there I was thinking, I'll take it easy before the opening of the upcoming Creations Atelier Metamorphosis...
Did you know I paint both traditional portraits in oil, as well as digital portraits on my iPad.
The thing about portraits for private individuals is that one can't always share them, and as many of them are commissioned as gifts, I can't really share process pics either.
One of these portraits, in oil, needs to leave the country in about a month. Now, this isn't possible with traditional oil paint, which takes weeks to be touch dry and can only be varnished after having fully cured in about 6 months or so to prevent the paint from cracking.
So, I had two options, to paint it in Acrylic (not my favourite medium for painting portraits), or go for artist quality Alkyd Oils, which look and behave very similarly to traditional oil paint, but dry within hours or days. I'm really enjoying playing around with those and despite having previously taught my students to mix and create their own shades from primary colours, I ended up buying quite a few different colours.
I have also discovered a new type of varnish which is breathable and removable and can be applied on oil paintings when touch dry, rather than having to wait for half a year.
